Keep the view

A new bridge is planned for State Route 1001, the road that runs between Route 903 and Pohopoco Drive. SR 1001 passes both the Penn Forest and Wild Creek Reservoirs and is one of the more scenic routes in Carbon County.

The bridge that is planned to span Wild Creek between the two reservoirs includes concrete guide rails This type of barrier it fairly standard on PennDOT bridges. It is safe, comparatively cheap and incredibly ugly.

When most people are on a bridge, they instinctively glance at the creek or river they are crossing. PennDOT does have safe barriers that allow a view, but they cost a little more and aren't used unless the public demands them.

The Wild Creek at one time was one of the most beautiful creeks in our area. Now Wild Creek is dammed by three reservoirs Penn Forest, Wild Creek and Beltzville. The portion of the creek under the proposed bridge is one of the few places the creek runs free. I hope that PennDOT considers that those of us who drive on that road want to keep our view of the creek unimpaired.
