The countdown begins for the Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival

Published March 16. 2010 05:00PM

In less than two weeks, Montreal's Burlesque diva, Lady Scarlett James, will grace the stage of the Mauch Chunk Opera House. Known internationally for her classic burlesque performances, James will open The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival's main attraction, The Big Reveal.

She will then take her place in the front row next to District Judge Edward Lewis and former USO Dancer and owner of the Gilded Cupid, Sheila O'Neil to judge the Burlesque competition.

The competition will feature big Burlesque names from all over the United States and Canada flocking to Jim Thorpe, hoping to take home the Crystal Corset award and $500 grand prize.

The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival is an all weekend event. The Big Reveal show, Saturday March 27 is only a fraction of what will be happening.

A kick off party to mingle and meet the performers and producers will take place Friday evening at Pepper Jacks on Broadway.

Belly Dance and Poi Spinning are just two of the classes the public is invited to participate in to learn more about the exotic art form of burlesque.

A bazaar featuring local vendors and artists will be held March 27 and 28 at the Mauch Chunk Museum. An after party at the new Molly McGuire's location is set for after The Big Reveal.

Dragontown Corsets is the presenting sponsor and driving force behind this years' festivities. Madam Corsetiere and executive producer Brooke AuBuchon will be hosting The Big Reveal.

Retro Lovely Magazine, a collective of artists, photographers and vintage lovers is a partner in the inaugural event. The winner of their pin up contest (Retrolovely.com) will be announced live, on stage at The Big Reveal.

L. T. Verrastro Inc., Importing Beer Distributor is sponsoring the pre- and post-parties.

Over a dozen local and silent partners have made generous contributions to help get The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival off the ground.

Producers AuBuchon, Tara Kubas and Michelle Gallagher are excited about how things are shaping up and are hoping that The Jim Thorpe Burlesque Festival will earn it's place back on the burlesque and vaudeville circuit.

A portion of The Big Reveal ticket sales will benefit the restoration of the Mauch Chunk Opera House.
