Police warn of ID scam targeting elderly
Summit Hill police say they have received a call from an elderly woman who was the victim of an attempted identity theft.
The woman said she received a telephone call from someone claiming to be calling on behalf of Medicare, the government- sponsored health care program for the elderly. The caller told the woman she would be getting a new Medicare card, and asked her for information including her bank account and Social Security numbers.
The woman was wary, and asked if she could call the person back. The caller hung up.
Police are warning elderly residents to be careful of anyone who calls or contacts them by letter or e-mail asking for bank account, Social Security or other personal information.
