Schuylkill man jailed for assault at mall

A Schuylkill County man was jailed on Wednesday, March 24, for an assault incident in a mall parking lot.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said on Tuesday, March 23, about 3 p.m. William Spearman, 22, and Stephen Whitman, 20, both of Minersville, got into a verbal argument in a parking lot at the Fairlane Village Mall in Norwegian Township. The argument turned physical when Spearman got into his vehicle, intentionally struck Whitman, and then fled. Whitman was flown by medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment of what troopers called non-life-threatening injuries.

Spearman turned himself into troopers on Wednesday and was arraigned before District Judge Charles Moran of Pottsville, on charges of aggravated assault and numerous related offenses. Bail was set at $10,000 straight cash which Spearman was unable to post and he was committed to the county prison in Pottsville.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and there may be additional charges filed.
