Checkpoint nets Monroe arrests
State Police and Pocono Mountain Regional police combined efforts on Wednesday, March 17, from 5-10 p.m. in targeting intoxicated drivers along SR115 in Tobyhanna, Tunkhannock and Chestnuthill townships, Monroe County.
Officials said 19 officers conducted the sobriety checkpoint in an effort to deter persons from driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol on St. Patrick's Day.
The checkpoint was combined with an enforcement patrol that saturated the surrounding area with marked patrol cars in an effort to deter the intoxicated driver.
The detail resulted in five arrests for DUI, one arrest for minor drug possession and 51 summary traffic arrests.
Police said it is the goal of law enforcement to deter drunk driving and prevent alcohol-related traffic accidents.
