Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its Secret Sister birthday celebration and Mexican Fiesta at the home of Patti Confer.

Members discussed a clothing driving, which will be held June 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the rear of Schick's Cafe. Items to be collected includewearable/usable clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, linens and stuff animals. All donations should be placed in tied garbage bags.

Following the meeting, members held an installation of officers for 2010-2011.

Officers will be: Lori Schmerfeld, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Donna Sterling, recording secretary; Diane Pruett, corresponding secretary; andMarie Umbriac, treasurer.

The meeting year will be closed out on June 16, with a celebration at a Japanese restaurant.

Griefshare

A new Griefshare group will be forming at Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, 223 E. Broad Street, as of June 1. Meetings will be held on Tuesdays, at 1:30 p.m.

The 13-week sessions, Biblically based and non-denominational, are designed to help those hurting from the loss of a loved one.

Gardening help

Penn State Master Gardeners hosts a gardening helpline, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 29, as well as conducting workshop sessions to help area residents.

Recycling

Wednesday is the day for curbside recycling pickup for all residents of Tamaqua.

All recyclable items must be placed in the containers issued to each borough household. Any other containers, such as plastic bags and cardboard boxes, will be emptied and left behind.

Anyone who needs a recycling container may contact borough hall at (570) 668-3444.

Collection bins for cardboard have been moved to the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Treatment Plant Road. Collection bins for newspaper can be found at the Tamaqua Borough Garage on East Broad Street.

Salem Methodist

The Rev. James Cavalerro will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Salem Methodist Church.
