Eldred Township observes Veterans Day
LINDA KOEHLER/TIMES NEWS The Rev. Joesph Lachcik of St. Matthew's UCC opened the Veterans Day service at Eldred Township Memorial in Kunkletown where the flags flew at half-mast in recognition of the lives lost at Fort Hood as requested by President Obama.
The Rev. Joesph Lachcik of St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown opened the Eldred Township's Veterans Day service with scripture and asked for "a moment of silence for those massacred at Fort Hood and those who have recently died in Afghanistan and Iraq in defense of liberty and freedom."
Elmer Frantz, the chairman of the Eldred Township Veteran's Memorial Committee, welcomed everyone and asked everyone to join in singing several patriotic songs including a tribute to all branches of the armed services.
Patriotic readings were presented by: Janet Smith-"A Tribute to Veterans" by Jerry Calow; Marlene Prutzman of a "Veterans Day Tribute" by Joanna Fuchs; Helen Mackes of "I Am A Soldier" by Neal T. Lesh.
Lorraine Everett related the significance of the date of 11/11 and its history from Armistice Day to the present Veterans Day. She then read off the names from the Eldred Township Memorial of those veterans that are still living.
"May the service of these men and women have not been in vain," she said.
