Five area x-country teams sweep

The Panther Valley, Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua boys joined the Northwestern and Tamaqua girls in posting cross country sweeps in multi-team matches on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Panther Valley-Minersville-Weatherly

The Panther Valley boys cross country team earned two wins with a 20-44 victory over Weatherly and a 19-38 decision over Minersville. Kyle Picht led the Panthers with a winning time of 19:24. Weatherly also dropped a 27-28 decision to Minersville. Andrew Vack finished in second place to lead the Wreckers.

In the lone girls meet, Minersville topped Panther Valley by a score of 21-34. Minersville's Kelsey Mitchell finished in first place with a time of 24:16, while Sindle Griffths paced the Panthers by finishing in second with a time of 25:18. Weatherly does not have a girls cross country team.

Jim Thorpe welcomed Marian and North Schuylkill for a Schuylkill League tri-meet.

The Olympian boys walked off with a 2-0 mark on the day, while both the Colts and Fillies finished 1-1. Meanwhile, the Lady Olympians ended up suffering two setbacks.

Sam Lux paced the Olympians with a second place finish in a time of 18:31. Teammates Dave Barrientos and Josh Williams finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The Colts' Michael Legath (seventh) and David Paul (ninth) grabbed top-10 finishes.

Madison Monaco led the Fillies with a third place finish in a time of 21:41. Kayla Susko (ninth) topped the Olympians.

Tamaqua-Nativity-Schuylkill Haven

Tamaqua had its way with Nativity and Schuylkill Haven as the Raiders posted a Schuylkill League sweep.

The Tamaqua boys captured the top three times on the day with Ricky Clemson crossing the tape at 18:20. Tyler Kline and Philip Christman placed second and third respectively as Tamaqua defeated Schuylkill Haven 17-42 and Nativity 15-50.

In the girls meet, Amber Carroll once again topped the competition with a winning time of 19:30. Tamaqua captured eight of the top nine times on the afternoon as they defeated Schuylkill Haven (19-44) and Nativity (15-50).

Palmerton-Northwestern-Wilson-Palisades-Saucon Vy-Moravian A.-Pen Argyl

The Northwestern girls went 6-0 while the boys went 5-1 in a Colonial League meet.

Palmerton also competed with its boys and girls both going 1-5.

The Tigers' Lindsay Kerr won the girls race while teammates Katie Hallingstad and Ramzy Burns finished third and sixth.

Cody Reinert of Northwestern was the top local finisher in the boys race with a fifth place.

Marian-Hazleton

Marian swept Hazleton, 25-10, 25-16, 25-8, in a matchup that was highlighted by a father/son coaching matchup.

The Fillies improved to 9-1 on the season, giving head coach John "Doc" Fallabel bragging rights over his son Chris Fallabel, who is in his second year as Hazleton's head coach.

Leading the way for Marian was senior outside hitter Devin Parambo, who had a huge all-around game. Parambo had 24 service points, including nine aces. She also added five kills and eight digs. The Fillies' Taylor Mele (19 digs); Marykate Sherkness (nine kills, three digs); and Abby Owsinski (13 kills and an .812 hitting percentage) contributed strong performances while sisters Katie (16 assists, four digs) and Nikki (12 assists, four digs) Collevechio shared the setting duties.

GIRLS TENNIS

Tamaqua-Salisbury

Tamaqua improved to 9-4 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Salisbury.

Kristina Zwolenik and Lauren Androkitis recorded straight set singles victories for the Lady Raiders, while the doubles tandem of Jordan Nowacki and Vanessa Wagner also won in straight sets.

Northwestern scored three goals in each half, en route to a 6-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

James Hoover booted in the first two goals of the game for the Tigers, while David Haaf, Luke Stuby, Timothy East and Curtis Cappuccino each added a goal apiece. Austin Marich and East each tacked on two assists.

Channing Shiffert had the lone goal for the Bulldogs.

The Tigers outshot Northern Lehigh 18-6.

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Pine Grove used the strength of a prolific second half to post a 4-1 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

After the score stood 1-1 at half, the Cardinals went on to score three second half goals.

Jon Mazella scored the Olympians' lone goal off an assist from Zach Ligenza.

Schuylkill Haven held off Jim Thorpe in a wild Schuylkill League match, 7-6.

Kristin Lawrence had three goals and assist for the Lady Olympians, who led 4-3 at one points, before Haven rattled off four straight goals to taske charge.

Caitlin Liscinski added two goals for Jim Thorpe. Chelsea Smelas had a goal and an assist.

Goalie Jah Page had 14 saves for the Lady Olympians.
