Wreckers, Raiders win volleyball thrillers

Weatherly and Tamaqua both pulled out thrilling wins in girls volleyball to highlight local sports action on Monday night

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-Weatherly

Weatherly pulled out a thrilling, 29-27, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-13 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Jim Thorpe.

Brittney Hinkle and Sarah Solinsky paced the Wreckers' attack. Hinkle had 33 digs, 15 kills, five assists, four aces and two blocks. Solinsky chipped in 27 digs, 15 kills, eight assists and five aces.

Also playing well for Weatherly (4-8 overall, 2-6 Schuylkill League) were Rachel Heister (14 digs, 18 assists, two aces), Alyssa Kephart (13 kills, 15 digs, two blocks, two aces), Lisa Panzarella (28 digs, five kills, four assists) and Sam Strizak (24 digs, 17 assists).

For Jim Thorpe, Victoria Nichols (nine kills) and Brittany Holland (eight kills) led the way at the net. Marissa Cantelmi had 21 assists while Jill Andrews was strong defensively with 40 digs.

Jim Thorpe won the JV match, 25-17, 25-16.

Sch. Haven-Tamaqua

Sarah Lesisko broke a 10-year old school record, which helped propel Tamaqua to a 26-24, 25-10, 25-8 Schuylkill League win over visiting Schuylkill Haven.

Lesisko was able to record 17 consecutive serves during the match, which broke the Blue Raiders' mark of 15 consecutive serves set in 1999. The sophomore finished with 21 service points, nine aces and three kills.

Paige Baddick chipped in with 28 assists, nine service points and three aces for the Raiders (6-4). Sarah Paluck added nine kills and four service points.

FIELD HOCKEY

ES North-Lehighton

Five different players scored as Lehighton routed East Stroudsburg North for a 5-1 Mountain Valley Conference win.

Abby Frey and Sarah Keer recorded first half goals for the Indians (12-0, 9-0 MVC), while Kenzie Teno, Rachel Werley and Vanessa Rimbey scored second half goals.

The Tribe's Echo Bretz was credited with two assists, while Corrine McConville and Kelcie Smith added other set-ups.

Indians' goalie Sarah Snyder finished with five saves.

Palisades-Palmerton

A prolific first half sparked the Pirates to a 4-0 Colonial League victory over the Blue Bombers.

Taylor Brittain, Alison Greaney and Mackenzie Kramer all posted first half goals for the Pirates, while Meryah Harding scored lone second half goal.

Lydia Anthony grabbed 11 saves between the Bombers' posts.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg

Stroudsburg (14-0, 10-0 MVC) remained unbeaten in Mountain Valley Conference play with a 6-1 win over the Bears (4-11, 4-6 MVC).

The Bears' Emily Skutnik was able to knock off Beth Smalley in straight sets for a 6-0, 6-3 singles' win.

Emily Young/Sarah Elmontacir 6-1, 6-1; Ashley Warner/Jordan Klein (S) def. Karli Williams/Nicole Reeder 6-4, 6-2.

BOYS SOCCER

Palmerton-No. Lehigh

Jimmy Bilger's third goal proved to be the game-winner as Northern Lehigh edged Palmerton, 3-2, in Colonial League action.

Bilger completed his hat trick and snapped a 2-2 tie with eight minutes remaining when he took a pass from Channing Shiffert and lofted a shot over Bomber goalie Zach Huber.

Shiffert finished with a pair of assists for Northern Lehigh (3-8 league, 5-10 overall) while Thatcher George also had an assist.

For Palmerton, Adam Berger had a goal and an assist. Dave Kenion also scored for the Bombers and Brian Mendez added an assist.

The Bulldogs finished with a 40-22 advantage in shots. Corey Snyder stopped 19 shots in the Nolehi net while Huber had 25 saves for the Bombers.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

David Haaf's goal with two minutes left in the game highlighted Northwestern's 2-1 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Curtis Cappuccino recorded the assist on what ended up the game-winning goal for the Tigers (9-4 overall, 9-3 CL).

Northwestern's Austin Marich scored an unassisted goal in the first half.

The Tigers outshot the Roughies 23-7. Northwestern keeper Nate Kester recorded four saves.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Geoff Sincavage's second half goal was all Tamaqua needed to score a 1-0 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Sincavage took a perfect feed from teammate Billy Breiner to give the Blue Raiders the game's lone score.

Tamaqua held an 11-8 edge in shots. Blue Raiders' goalie Zach Lakitsky preserved the shutout by grabbing eight saves.

ES North-Lehighton

Luis Gomes's two goals and two assists highlighted East Stroudsburg North's 7-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton (0-13, 0-9 MVC).

Agypong Johnson added two goals and an assist for the Timberwolves (8-7, 6-3 MVC), while Xavier Comea was credited with three assists.

Geoff Ebbert finished with 12 saves in front of the Indians' net.

Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Haven

Michail Georgevic scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Hurricanes to a 4-0 victory over the Olympians in a Schuylkill League Division I match.

The win gave the Hurricanes (14-0, 11-0 SL) their 10th division title in the past 12 years.

Jon Nettles scored a goal and added two assists for the Hurricanes. Chris Markish also scored a goal.

Matt McCauley (12 saves) and Justin Kaminski (three saves) shared goal for the Olympians.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Kayla Hope scored with 24-seconds left in regulation to lift Tamaqua to a 1-0 Schuylkill League win over visiting Pottsville.

Hope darted down field and then took in a beautiful pass from Kailee Rottet to keep the Blue Raiders' perfect on the season (12-0 overall, 9-0 SL).

Blue Raiders' keeper Chey Bates played her role to perfection by recording her seventh shutout on the season. Bates ended up with seven saves.
