Panthers, Wreckers end with victories

Panther Valley and Weatherly came up with wins in their final regular season volleyball matches.

Panther Vy.-Mt. Carmel

Panther Valley made quick work of Mt. Carmel, breezing to a 25-5, 25-10, 25-6 Schuylkill League victory.

Panther Valley (13-3, 10-3) will now enter Thursday's league playoffs at Martz Hall in Pottsville. The Division 2 champion Panthers will face undefeated Division 4 champ Pottsville Nativity in a 6 p.m. semifinal. The winner will play in the league title game at 7:30.

Leading the way for the Panthers in their regular season finale against the Tornadoes was Christa Mantz. Mantz had 21 service points and 10 kills, becoming the first player in Nancy Filer's 10 years as head coach to surpass 500 kills in her career.

Also playing well were Carly Markovich (23 assists, 11 service points, seven kills); Tricia Janowiak (seven service points, three kills); Deanna Focht (13 service points, three kills); and Amy Yusella (nine kills, six service points).

Panther Valley won the JV match, 25-9, 25-13.

Tamaqua-Halifax

Halifax outlasted Tamaqua, 25-27, 15-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11, in Schuylkill League action.

Paige Baddick led the Raiders with 11 service points and 31 assists. Tiffany Billman added eight service points and 11 kills; Stacey Wallace: had six service points and eight kills; and Brittney Oswald finished with nine kills, nine service points and six aces.

Tamaqua finishes regular season play with an 8-8 record. It has qualified for the District 11 Class AA tournament.

Halifax won the JV match, 2-1.

Marian-Nativity

The Fillies just couldn't finish off the Green Wave as they fell 17-25, 23-25, 24-26 in their final Schuylkill League match of the season.

Marian (16-2 overall, 14-2) received 10 kills one assist, one ace, 11 digs and three blocks from Devin Parambo. Abby Owsinski added six kills, three aces, two digs and four blocks. Tori Vadyak had three kills, five digs and four blocks. Rachel Krajcirik had 26 assists, two kills, one ace, one block and seven digs. Taylor Mele had 21 digs, two kills and two aces and Mary Kate Sherkness added five kills and seven digs.

The Marian JV's finished the season 18-0 with a 25-13, 25-19 win.

Weatherly-Mahanoy Area

The Lady Wreckers ended with a win over Mahanoy Area 26-24, 25-21, 25-12, to finish the season at 9-11, 7-9 to just miss the District 11 playoffs.

Rachel Heiser had 17 assists two digs and two aces for Weatherly. Alyssa Kephart added 15 kills, two assists, two aces and eight digs. Brittany Hinkle had 15 kills, three assists, nine digs and four aces. Darah Dolinsky had seven kills, six assists, two blocks and six digs. Alyssa Panzarella had nine kills and four aces and Alyssa Miller had four dinks, 18 assists and four digs.

Mahanoy Area won the JV game 25-15, 25-23.
