Schuylkill driver injured in crash

An elderly Schuylkill County driver was flown to a Lehigh Valley area hospital following a crash that involved a car and dump truck. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the crash occurred about 11:54 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the intersection of SR61 and Mall Road, in Norwegian Township.

Troopers said Allen G. Wood, 91, of Pottsville, was driving a 1998 Subaru Legacy eastbound on Mall Road and approaching a flashing red traffic light. Russell A. Chubb, 56, of Mount Carmel, was southbound on 61 in a 2006 Mack Granite dump truck and approaching a flashing yellow traffic light.

Troopers said Wood pulled onto 61 in front of the truck. The truck hit the car on the left side.

After impact the Legacy traveled about 270 degress clockwise hitting a curb on the right shoulder where it came to rest. Wood was ejected out the driver's side window of his car and came to rest next to his vehicle.

Wood was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center East, Pottsville, but later flown by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. Chubb was not injured.

Troopers said the investigation into the accident is continuing as they have not been able to interview Wood.
