Bears pick up basketball victories

Pleasant Valley picked up victories in boys and girls basketball on Tuesday night.

Also getting basketball victories were the Northwestern boys and the Northern Lehigh and Palmerton girls.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Northwestern held Pen Argyl scoreless in the second quarter and went on to post the 58-47 Colonial League win.

Leading the way in scoring for the Tigers were Kevin Oxley and Trevor German with 13 points apiece. Garrett Lerner chipped in with 10.

For Pen Argyl, Joe Wagner led the way with 15 points.

Pleasant Valley-Dieruff

Trailing 30-28 heading into the final quarter, Pleasant Valley outscored the Huskies 20-12 in the last eight minutes to pull out a 48-42 non-league win.

Pat Kregeloh had a nice outing with 15 points to lead the Bears. Teammates Nick Stanovick and Eric Wild both chipped in 10 points.

Montreal Howard had a game-high 21 points for Dieruff.

The Bears also pulled out the JV contest, 37-25, with Caleb Knudsen and Felwyn Wright scoring nine points apiece.

Bangor-Northern Lehigh

The Slaters outscored host Northern Lehigh 21-13 in the final eight minutes to pull out the 59-57 Colonial League victory.

Using six three pointers, Andy Mulitsch scored a game-high 24 points to lead Bangor.

For Northern Lehigh, Nick Pappas and Evan Biegley scored 16 points apiece with Jordan Waylen adding 15.

In the JV contest, Northern Lehigh pulled out the 48-45 win.

Catasauqua-Palmerton

Josh Case scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the second quarter as the Rough Riders pulled away from the Blue Bombers in the Colonial League opener for both.

After the Bombers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Catasauqua ran off the next 14 points and never looked back.

Steve Yost backed Case with 11 for the Roughies. Zach Freed was the lone Bomber in double figures with 11.

Palmerton did manage to stay unbeaten with a 45-40 win in the JV game behind 15 points from Brett Snyder.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Mahanoy Area edged Weatherly, 39-33, in the Schuylkill league opener for both teams.

Jim Wagner led Mahanoy Area with 13 points.

For the Wreckers, Brendan Rowan had a game-high 19 points. Keith Barna also had a nice game with nine points and eight assists.

In the JV contest, Mahanoy pulled out a 43-37 win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. Lehigh-Bangor

Northern Lehigh put up 14 points in the overtime period to defeat Bangor, 56-52, in Colonial League action.

Aimee Oertner had a game-high 27 points, including a 15 for 18 performance from the foul line. Sonya Josephson added 14 points for the winners.

Kaitlyn McDonald had 16 for the Lady Slaters.

Palmerton beat up on Catasauqua, cruising to a 37-14 Colonial League victory.

The Bombers were led by Kelsey Hay and her 12 points. Casey Rinfret chipped in with nine and Kristen Romano added eight.

Pleasant Valley breezed to an easy, 52-34, non-league win over Dieruff.

Amber Chieffo paced the Lady Bears (1-2) with a game-high 15 points. Teammate Kasey Meckes added 12.

Pleasant Valley was the JV game, 49-5.

Pen Argyl ran away from Northwestern for a 50-26 Colonial League victory.

Laura Cinelli and Megan Zanette led the Green Knights with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Only four girls got in the book for Northwestern. Sara Jones led the way with 11 points. Natalie Hill added eight points.
