'Annie Jr.' opens Friday at Shawnee Playhouse
Rambunctious, red, and ready for adventure, "Annie Jr." brings an unmatchable energy to the Shawnee Playhouse's stage this summer.
The show begins Friday and runs through Aug. 25.
The story follows a young girl named Annie, who is abandoned by her parents as a baby, and grows up an orphan in 1930's New York City.
Determined to find her parents, Annie's search takes her on an adventure where she encounters a lovable mutt named Sandy and finds a new home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks.
The musical Annie is based on the popular comic strip by Harold Gray. The original Broadway production began in 1977 and ran for six years, setting a record for the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre).
With music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan, the production was a smash hit.
With classic songs such as "Tomorrow" and "It's a Hard Knock Life," the musical won a Tony Award for Best Musical.
"Annie Jr." will be directed by Brandon Hanks.
Show times are 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., depending on the day.
