Garden club
The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met Sept. 26 in the social hall of Zion Church.
Guest speaker was Jen Clinton, a Penn State Master Gardener, who presented a program on container gardening.
Grandparents Day was the theme of the flower arrangements, with Mary Bridygham taking first place. Evelyn Adams was awarded second place and Carol Kohn won third place.
Blooming flowers was the theme for the specimen category, with Linda Leiby winning first place and Bridygham taking second place.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 and will include an anniversary celebration. There will be a catered dinner and entertainment. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 570-467-3400 or 570-668-2927.
New members are always welcome.
Holiday help
The holidays are just around the corner and the Tamaqua Salvation Army stands ready to help those in need.
Registrations for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday assistance will be taken over a three-day period, Oct. 10-12. Hours will be from noon to 6 p.m. each day for residents of the Tamaqua Area and Panther Valley School Districts. There will not be any registrations taken before or after that three-day period.
Proper identification and proof of need are required. Registrants MUST provide proof of residence, such as a utility bill; Social Security cards for every household member; proof of all household income, including employment/ wages, public assistance, food stamps, Social Security/SSI, and any other type of income; official birth certificates for anyone under the age of 12; expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medical, etc.; and a working phone number. There will not be a makeup date, so please make sure you attend one of the three registration dates.
Thanksgiving distribution will be held Nov. 20, while Christmas distribution will be on Dec. 20.
Andreas parade
The annual Andreas Halloween Parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
Sponsored by the West Penn Lions/Lioness Club and the Andreas Sporting Club, the parade will begin forming at 6:15 p.m. at the sporting club. Spectators will have the chance to see the marchers twice as the route starts at the club, then circles around and returns to the starting point.
Refreshments will be provided to participants and prizes will be awarded.
Entries must be registered by Oct. 13 to be eligible for prizes.

Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Center will be held at 2:30 p.m. and the Reason for God growth group will meet at 6 p.m.
Activities for next week include: Monday, Apostle’s Creed growth group meets at 1 p.m., celebrate Recovery is at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, sisters growth group meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, prayer gathering at 9 a.m., Celebrate Recovery training at 10 a.m., TYM REMIX meets at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m.
