Panther Valley students celebrate area veterans
Panther Valley Intermediate School marked Veterans Day by welcoming veterans from the Panther Valley, including some students’ relatives.
Student speakers noted the origin of the holiday, sang patriotic songs, observed a moment of silence for soldiers currently deployed around the world, and those who died while serving their country.
The Panther Valley High School JROTC presented the colors, while the high school band played patriotic music.
More than 20 veterans joined in the ceremony. They were treated to a breakfast provided by The Nutrition Group and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Fifth-graders Eli and Maddison Maynard welcomed their grandfathers, Bill Maynard and Dave Padora. Both veterans attended the former Lansford High School.
Eli said he learned that the holiday was established to mark the end of World War I.
“We learned that World War I ended on the 11th day of the 11th month,” he said.
Bill Maynard, a Marine veteran, said he’s humbled by the fact that there seem to be more events in the Panther Valley area honoring veterans.
“This is an honor to be here,” he said.
Padora, a Navy veteran, said it’s important to educate the kids about the sacrifices made by our soldiers to defend our country.
“It’s good to bring them out and honor them,” Padora said.
