Thanks for the column on police work
Message for Bruce Frassinelli … very good column on hazards of police work, but the dangers are neither new or more intense. I’m a retired San Diego police sergeant and in the mid-80s, little old San Diego held the national record for most police officers per capita killed in the line of duty. True story.
Also, there is no law in this state requiring us to license our firearms. If someone in law enforcement told you the suspect was being charged for “owning an unlicensed firearm,” they’re very mistaken and misspoke. It’s a common misconception, but here’s the truth — the state licenses people who want to carry a concealed weapon, i.e. in their vehicles. There is no such thing as state licensing of firearms here. In the application for a “CCW” license, there isn’t even a question regarding what type of gun you intend to carry concealed.
This man who shot the trooper wasn’t licensed by a county sheriff to carry a concealed weapon in his vehicle, therefore he’s being charged for that crime — not for having an unlicensed gun.
Thanks again for the article, keep up the good work.
