Jim Thorpe’s Kayley Kovac had a big opening night to close in on the school’s all-time girls basketball scoring record.

Kayley Kovac scored 29 points to power Jim Thorpe to a 66-23 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven.
Kovac, who did all of her scoring in the first three quarters, now needs just 16 points to pass 2012 graduate Celeste Robinson and become the all-time leading scorer in Jim Thorpe girls basketball history. Kovac will go after the record today when the Olympians travel to Panther Valley (2:30 p.m.).
Brandy Montemuro had 10 points and Payton Kovac added nine points for Jim Thorpe (1-0).

Northwestern overcame a slow start to top Whitehall 40-36 for a season-opening win in non-league play.
Jessica Williamson had 10 points for the Tigers, who trailed 8-2 after the first quarter. Sydney Sevrain added eight points, while Leighana Lister tallied seven.
Alix Buskirk paced the Zephyrs with 12 points.

Tamaqua rolled to a season-opening 59-42 win over Schuylkill Valley in non-league action.
Thad Zuber nailed five three-pointers and led the Blue Raiders (1-0) with 26 points, while Lucas Gregoire added 13 points.
Tamaqua also won the JV game, 62-43.
