2018 Reorganization meeting: Weissport has new council president
Arland Moyer is the new president of Weissport Borough Council.
Moyer was selected unanimously by his peers for the position, previously held by Gene Kershner. Kershner’s term on council ran out in December and he hadn’t sought re-election.
Moyer, a longtime council member, was previously the vice president.
Brenda Leiby, an incumbent who was re-elected to a four-year term in November, was named vice president during Tuesday’s reorganization meeting.
There were no other nominations for the position.
Newly elected Mayor Paulette Watson swore in those council members who were elected in November as well as tax collector Lynette Moyer.
Besides Moyer, Watson swore in Leiby, Greg May and Thomas Ketchledge.
May previously served on the council, resigned late last year, and then was elected to a new seat via write-in vote.
The following appointments were made by the council:
• Accountants: Kirk Summa.
• Engineer: Alfred Benesch.
• Zoning Officer: Duane Dellecker.
• Solicitor: Attorney Greg Mousseau.
• Secretary-Treasurer: Bill Donovan.
• Depositories: Mauch Chunk Trust and PLGIT.
The council set garbage collection rates. There will be no increase in 2018.
The rates are $185.60 per individual dwelling unit, $220.25 per small business and $349.40 for tap rooms and large businesses.
In one other matter, the council adopted an updated Stormwater Maintenance Ordinance.
Mousseau said there are no changes in borough regulations regarding stormwater maintenance, but that the update is at the request of the engineer and is needed in the event potential grants become available.
