Tamaqua council addresses stone bids, parking, other issues

Published January 18. 2018 01:45PM

Tamaqua Borough council closed out some ongoing items at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt recommended the borough reject a bid received for the pickup of 2A stone and accept the bid for delivery.

An issue arose because there were issues with the two different types of 2A stone, one being sandstone and one being limestone. Steigerwalt recommended the borough go through COSTARS to purchase 2A limestone, and that way the borough would have both types available and be able to create two stockpiles for use as necessary.

Council received communication from the East End Fire Company that David Price Jr. has been appointed chief of the fire company.

Council approved a handicap parking space application for 114 Market St. and denied one for 119 Market St., since its approval would exceed the maximum number of spaces allowed in that block. Members of council discussed the borough’s current policy, which limits the number of spaces available.

It was noted that although the permits are applied for by residents, they are not guaranteed spots, and anyone with a handicap license plate or placard can park in the space.

It was suggested that a side street or other alternative parking space be looked at for the second applicant.

Council approved two recommendations for certificates of appropriateness as recommended by HARC: one at 36 E. Mauch Chunk St. for signage and an awning; and one at 200-202 E. Broad St. for a brick veneer.

Borough solicitor Michael Greek advised council that the deputy tax collector for the borough will be Diane Malay, the tax collector for Walker Township, and borough tax collector Pam McCullion will reciprocate the service for Walker Township. Council approved the request.

Mayor Nathan Gerace advised council that he has been spending a lot of time with the police department, including ride-alongs with patrol.

Council held an executive session to discuss personnel, real estate and legal matters.
