Carbon County prepares for 175th anniversary
Plans are taking shape for Carbon County’s 175th anniversary.
County commissioners on Thursday announced they will be moving their March 15 public meeting to the county’s birthday, March 13.
The gathering will be held at 2 p.m. in the ornate courtroom No. 1.
“We’ll have some readings of minutes from the original meetings. We’re still working on the program,” said Commissioners Chairman Wayne E. Nothstein.
Former elected county officials have been invited, and the plaques in the Joseph L. Boyle Plaza, at the courthouse annex, will be rededicated, he said.
There will be two cakes adorned with renderings of the courthouse, said Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard.
“It should be exciting,” Nothstein said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
The quartoseptennial celebration marks the county’s formation on March 13, 1843, from parts of Northampton and Monroe counties.
In other matters, commissioners for the second time received no responses for requests for proposals on guide rail installations at the covered bridge on Covered Bridge Road over Buckwa Creek in Lower Towamensing Township.
The county first published a notice seeking proposals in November.
“We need to wait and contact the (state) Department of Transportation, since we’re using liquid fuels tax funds, to see how we may proceed with the project,” said County Administrator Eloise K. Ahner.
