Franklin approves club’s request for youth fishing day May 13
Franklin Township’s board of supervisors approved a request from the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club to hold the eighth annual Youth Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 13.
Barry Reed, representing the club, spoke to the supervisors during the public comment period to request permission to use the dam for the event and a 30-day restriction.
“We’d like to keep it open for anyone under 16 to fish that day,” Reed said. “Last year, we worked in coordination with the Franklin Lions and the township approved us to have a 30 day restriction on that dam so that the youth of the township or the area can utilize that without a lot of competition from the adult fishermen.”
Reed said that most of the feedback from last year’s event, including commentary from Waterways Conservation Officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Scott Christman, was positive.
“It allowed the youth to get out there and fish, and hopefully it will keep them interested in that type of activity for the rest of their lives,” Reed said.
Reed said that Christman will obtain any forms for permission of use from the PA Fish and Boat Commission.
Chairman Jason Frey commended Reed and the Rod and Gun Club for the success of last year’s event, and offered help promote the event to interested parties.
“Each year it gets a better turnout, so if some people come in here you could maybe remind them of that event for us, and hopefully it works out pretty well,” Reed said.
