March 5, 2011 — Northwestern’s Madison Burns earns gold medal in the 100 breaststroke at the District 11 Class 2A swimming championships. Burns also receives the Dennis A. McGinley Award as the meet’s outstanding female swimmer. Her time of 1:04.35 easily tops runner-up Katie Pielmeier of Palmerton (1:09.30). Tamaqua’s Joann Butkus takes third in the 100 freestyle (54.92), while fourth-place finishes are earned by Tamaqua’s Dan DeWire in the 100 backstroke (59.01) and Palmerton’s Sawyer Allen in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.84).
