Lehighton starts Hometown Heroes project

Published March 09. 2018 02:32PM

Banners that feature military personnel will soon adorn the streets of Lehighton.

The gallant soldiers will receive the recognition they so richly deserve by virtue of the Hometown Heroes Banners project.

Headed by the Lehighton United Veterans Organization, the endeavor will lead to individual banners being placed throughout the borough.

Kevin Long, Commander of the Lehighton UVO, said the banners will honor area men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.

“We want to start with the bypass, then work our way through the rest of town,” he said. “It’s nice to recognize those men and women.”

Long noted that the program — slated to get underway next month — will acknowledge the borough’s “very large veteran presence.”

“We think it’s such a great way to honor our veterans,” he said. “It gives attention to them.”

Long said the banners will honor men and women during any time of service.

He said each banner will cost $200, which includes a 30-by-60-inch banner, along with the brackets and hardware.

Long said anyone interested in a banner may pick up a form at the Legion, or from any of the Legion members.

Forms must be filled out and returned with a photo of the soldier and payment, and should include the full name of person and photo of service person, branch of service, and any war or campaign.

Long said Lisa Perry will be at the American Legion Post 314 in Lehighton from 1:30-4:30 p.m. April 7, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15, and 7-9 p.m. April 24 to scan their pictures.

Checks should be made payable to: United Veterans Organization, 314 Veterans Ave., Lehighton, Pa 18235.

Anyone with questions may contact Long at 610-377-9736 or 484-629-0013.
