A look back: March 10, 1971
A Lansford native, the Rev. Richard J. Giuliani, son of Mrs. Rose Giuliani, was sworn in as the first member of the Bethlehem Police Department’s “God Squad” last week.
Father Giuliani, 28, will not carry a gun, only a badge. He is the first chaplain in the history of the department and the first priest in the Lehigh Valley to carry a police job.
The job is voluntary and his hours will be 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., but he is likely to be on call 24 hours a day.
Father Giuliani has been riding with the police and detectives since last summer and his usefulness has been proven on numerous occasions.
