A well-known educator and an established businesswoman have been tabbed to receive some lofty accolades.

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce has announced Stephen Ulicny of Tamaqua as the 55th recipient of the Joseph M. Plasko Citizenship Award.

Ulicny is a teacher in the Tamaqua Area School District. He is also the Student Government Association adviser and a coordinator for the school’s annual Mini-Thon event.

He is also involved in his children’s activities by coaching the Tamaqua Youth Soccer Association, operating the clock for the youth soccer program and a volunteer for the Tamaqua Area Band Boosters.

Ulicny is also part of the band Tool Shed Jack, which volunteers its time and talent at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center to encourage young artists to pursue their talents.

The band also advocates for cancer patients at the American Cancer Society’s Telethon and holds numerous benefits for specific individuals.

In addition, Ulicny is also involved in the management of the East End Park Association and currently serves as president of this organization.

As written on his nomination form, “Stephen is a selfless hidden hero.”

Ulicny said his reaction to being announced as the recipient of the Joseph M. Plasko Citizenship Award was an “absolute surprise.”

“The people who have been nominated and accepted, these are people who are foundations of the community,” Ulicny said. “I’m very, very flattered, and I’m honored.”

Ulicny said he realizes others have helped play a role in his success.

“You’re not going to be successful unless you have a good team,” he said.

Ulicny said he believes it’s important to volunteer.

“If you don’t do it, who’s going to,” he said. “If you can make a contribution, you should.”

The chamber also announced Linda Marchalk as the Business Person of the Year.

Marchalk owns Northeast Edge Associates LLC, a full service title and real estate closing office with locations at the old Shepp House on 204 Broad St. in Tamaqua, as well as one in Schuylkill Haven.

She is actively involved in the Tamaqua community, and has served as president of the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce and still holds a seat on the volunteer board of directors.

Marchalk serves as the Schuylkill County treasurer and is also treasurer of Schuylkill County Republican Women.

Marchalk said her reaction upon learning that she was selected as the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year “was a variety of emotions.”

“I went from being happy and excited to humbled,” Marchalk said.

“Being the recipient of this distinguished award makes me reflect back on the person that I have become throughout my lifetime, and I have become who I am today because of my family, friends and faith in God.”

Marchalk added, “My family has given me my work ethic, told me to work hard, and strive to achieve my dreams and goals. My friends have given me my backbone to stand tall and be proud, told me to enjoy the good times, and endure through the hard times.

“My faith in God has given me reassurance that there is hope and never give up, taught me to be honest and reliable and help others in need.”

“I am truly blessed and honored to receive this award,” she said.

Both Ulicny and Marchalk will be honored at the 66th Annual Community Dinner April 26 at Mountain Valley Golf Course.

Reservations are required. Contact the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce at 570-668-1880 for more information.
