Tamaqua seniors
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met April 26 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 58 members in attendance. Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “It Takes Faith and Love.”
Guest Cindy Himbel was given a warm welcome, and birthday wishes were extended to Madelene Heffelfinger, Wendy Perla and Gladys Arner. Refreshments were served.
The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.
Primitive Methodist
Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include a reception of adult members.
Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.
Hope in the Mountains NFG will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday.
The board of trustees will meet at 7 p.m. on May 9.
Calvary Lewistown
The Rev. Philip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a re-creation of the Lord’s Supper.
Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a time of singing and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.
The National Day of Prayer will be observed on Thursday with a combined service at 7:15 p.m. in the Reynolds United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ken Melber will be the speaker.
Ascension Day services will be held at 7:15 p.m. on May 10 at Steigerwalt’s Church of God in McKeansburg. The Rev. Jim Williams will be the speaker.
Hunger walk
Tamaqua’s 2018 Hunger Weekend will conclude with a Hunger Walk on May 6. The approximately 1-mile walk will begin at 2 p.m., in the area of the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Hunger Weekend is a combined effort of the Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, designed to benefit Tamaqua’s three food pantries — Primitive Methodist Church, Trinity United Church of Christ and the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Car show
The Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a series of free, informal car shows at Heisler’s Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley. The shows will be held on five weekends through June 17. Billed as “Sundae Drivers Park and Gawk, organizers say the events are meant to be fun, informal shows where car enthusiasts can spend time together swapping stories and enjoy good food.
The next get-together is scheduled for May 6. Additional shows will be held May 20, June 3 and June 17.
Hours for all the events are tentatively scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Rush-Ryan seniors
The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met April 24 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 49 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Beams of Sunshine.”
A moment of silence was held in memory of John Haldeman.
Guest Mary Ann Lishman and new members Sherry Herb and Dorothy DeWire were given warm welcomes. Birthday wishes were extended to Neal Flexer, while Kim Usalis, Roger and Dorothy Walck, Gerald Konack, Barbara Cassero and Eleanor Schmerfeld were welcomed back.
Nominations for officers were accepted with Robert Neifert and Nancy Godanis for president; Mary Reed and Grace Sakusky for vice president; Sharon Haldeman and Ruthann Feane for secretary; and Larry Bower for treasurer.
Upcoming events include: May 1, trip to Penn’s Peak for Branson Fever; May 17, trip to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre.
The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville and is open to anyone 55 or older.
The next meeting will include a celebration of the group’s 39th anniversary. Festivities begin at noon.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the MS Walk at Coca-Cola Park will begin at 10 a.m., junior choir rehearses at 11 a.m., Confirmation class will meet at 11:15 a.m., Hunger Walk in Tamaqua at 2 p.m., Boy and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, newsletter deadline, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., mother-daughter tea at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m., senior choir rehearsal will be at 7:30 p.m.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.
Also on Sunday, bells will rehearse at 8 a.m., Confirmation and Sunday school classes are at 10:30 a.m.
The choirs will rehearse next Thursday at the following times: angel choir, 6 p.m., shepherd choir, 6:30 p.m., chancel choir, 7:30 p.m.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Rogation Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include communion. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.
Activities for next week include: Tuesday, fundraising committee meets at 6:30 p.m., preschool board meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, OWLS meet at noon, consistory meets at 6:30 p.m.
