Walk Saturday

Team Wunder and friends will be joining Superhero Brayden and the Wunder family in the fight against cystic fibrosis on Saturday at Cedar Crest College in Allentown.

Brayden is the grandson of Dan and Wanda Wunder, members of St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown.

For more information, call Dan Wunder at 570-656-3161. Formal registration is at 9 a.m. at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation tent. The walk starts at 10 a.m.

Park fundraiser

The West End Park and Open Space Commission has announced the annual 5K9 Trail Leisure Run/Walk at the West End Regional Park on 578 Evergreen Hollow Road in Chestnuthill Township on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., with registration starting at 9 a.m. The run/walk is open to all ages and abilities and the Dave Fleetwood Memorial Trail will be available for those wishing a leisurely walk on a firm and stable surface accessible to all wheeled devices. Dogs are welcome as long as they remain on a leash that is no longer than the 6-foot maximum.

All proceeds will fund the West End Regional Leash-Free Dog Park to be located off Merwine-Hilltop Drive. The dog park will be completely fenced with areas for both large and small dogs. This project represents Phase II of the development of the 244-acre West End Regional Park.

Planting time

The Garden of Giving needs many hands on deck for this Saturday, as well as May 19 and May 20, for prepping and the big planting.

May Friendship Day

Church Women United of Monroe County invites everyone to May Friendship Day at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The host church is Zion United Church of Christ, 14 N. Eighth St., Stroudsburg. The theme is God’s Presence.

Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share.

Cinco De Mayo

McMichaels will host a Cinco De Mayo dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes tacos, rice & beans, enchiladas, fried ice cream and beverages.

Dual events

There will be two happenings at McMichaels UMC on Sunday. The worship is at 9 a.m., as it usually is, but at 3 p.m. the District Conference will be held.

Bike blessing

The American Legion Riders Chapter 927 is holding its annual rescheduled bike blessing Sunday. It is open to the public. The service will be performed by Bishop James Mills. American Legion Post 927.

The Legion is located at the corner of Route 209 and Fairgrounds Road in Gilbert.

A meeting of the Riders Club club will be held at 10:30 a.m. before the blessing of the bikes at noon. And the SAL will meet at 11 a.m. for its monthly meeting, also before the blessings of the bikes ceremony.

Ross supervisors

The Ross Township board of supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Ross Township Municipal Building at 250 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet will meet and work at 1 p.m. Tuesday. New members are welcome. The group will probably meet in the Parish Hall.

Korean Vets

The local Korean War Veterans group will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert.

OTOH meets

Operation: Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

On May 19, OTOH will be walking in the Memorial Day (Armed Forces) parade in Scranton. There will be a 5K run which will be starting a 9 a.m.

Pre-staging starts at 9:30 a.m., parade at 11 a.m., ending around 3 p.m. The Pace Car from Pocono Raceway is scheduled to be there.

Middle school concert

The Pleasant Valley Middle School band concert will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Lions speakers

The Western Pocono Lions Club had Linda Raudabaugh, office manager for Monroe County’s Meals on Wheels, as speaker for its April meeting.

She had shopping bags and pens for the club members.

The club presented her with a certificate of appreciation and a donation for the program.

The club’s scholarship winners, Sara Coyle and Ryan Stewart, both from Pleasant Valley High School, have been announced.

The speaker for the May meeting will be Hope Christman, director for PVEN.

Auxiliary meets

The Auxiliary of the American Legion, Post 927, will meet at 6 p.m. May 9.

Refresher class

An AARP Driver Safety program, a four-hour refresher driving course, designed for qualified drivers 50 and older is being given at 1 p.m. May 12 at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Those taking the class must have evidence of taking the eight-hour course within the past 36 months.

There is a fee.

Spelling bee

Monroe County’s Annual Senior Spelling Bee will take place from 1-3 p.m. May 15, at Northampton Community College Monroe Campus, Keystone Room, at 2411 Route 715 Tannersville.

It is open to Monroe County residents 55 years of age or older. Anyone interested should call the Monroe County Aging Office at 570-420- 3735 or toll free 800-498-0330.

The first-prize winner will receive $100 and the runner-up will receive $50.

Tennis lessons

The West End Park & Open Space Commission will sponsor tennis lessons at the Pleasant Valley Middle School courts from May 15 through Aug. 2. There are two six-week sessions for all ages.

Ages 11U will play Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; ages 12 to 16 will be Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; 14 through 18 years will play Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; adults on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Munchkin Tennis, 6 to 7 years, will start on Tuesday, June 26 at 4:15 p.m.
