Marian clinches District 11 baseball berth

Marian’s baseball team clinched a district playoff berth with a win over Mahanoy Area on Friday.

Other local winners included Northwestern baseball and Northern Lehigh softball.

BASEBALL

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian scored in every inning, including eight runs in the second frame, to cruise to a 13-1 Schuylkill win over Mahanoy Area.

Every Colts player on offense either recorded a hit, scored a run, or collected an RBI.

Matt Doherty finished with two hits and knocked in four runs, while Alex Kubishin collected two doubles and three RBIs. Marian (10-7; 6-5) also received two hits and three runs from Aaron Mason, and a hit and two runs from Quest Wilson.

With the victory, Marian clinched a District 11 playoff berth.

Northwestern-Salisbury

Northwestern scored three runs in the 10th inning to pull out a 10-7 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

Trevor Schreiner had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Tigers (13-5; 12-5), who trailed 6-2 after six innings. Derek Holmes contributed a hit and knocked in three runs.

The Falcons received three hits from Linn and two hits and three RBIs from Miller.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom

David Smith hit a two-run homer to help power Freedom to a 4-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Griffen Connelly added two hits and earned the pitching win.

The Bears (9-7) received two hits and a run scored from Nick Gattuso, while Brandon Ratti also collected a pair of hits. Collin Stivala chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Northern Lehigh-Notre Dame

Northern Lehigh used a seven-run third inning to pull away from Notre Dame and claim a 13-3 Colonial League victory.

Brianna Schock went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to pace the Bulldogs (14-4; 12-4). Lauren Hoffman added three hits and knocked in a pair of runs.

Kaitlyn Hoffman allowed just four hits in gaining the pitching win.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Haley Burd pitched a five-hit shutout to lead North Schuylkill to a 2-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Burd walked five and struck out four as the Spartans posted victories over the Blue Raiders in back-to-back days.

Joslin Stitzer accounted for the scoring with a two-out, two-run double in the third inning.

Jada Schellhammer pitched well in defeat, walking one and striking out eight. She also walked three times.

Miranda Chinchar had a double for Tamaqua (12-4; 9-3).

Pleasant Valley-Freedom

Freedom’s Glorianne Potenza pitched a five-hit shutout against Pleasant Valley to earn a 6-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Potenza, who walked two and struck out three, benefited from her team’s five-run third inning.

Morgan Frantz had two hits for the Bears (6-10), while the Patriots received two hits from J. Roman and two RBIs from Matison Piripavel and Taylor Resestar.
