A look back: May 14, 1937
An improvement in the operation of Bell Telephone in Mauch Chunk will be made effective tomorrow according to an announcement by E.W. McGinnes, manager here for the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania.
McGinnes stated the improvement provides for “audible ringing” which will permit the person making the call to hear the distant telephone being rung.
“This added convenience,” Mr. McGinnes pointed out, “will relieve subscribers of waiting on the line until the operator says, ‘They do not answer.’ Calling subscribers can hear the bell at the other end being rung, and, after allowing sufficient time for an answer, may hang up.”
