Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library has several events scheduled this month, including a visit from performer and storyteller Matt Dodd, who will present the program “Stories of the Red, White and Blue.” The presentation is part of the Tamaqua Remembers project.

Dodd will be at the library, 30 S. Railroad St., at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Also in honor of Memorial Day, there will be a gently used book sale between May 14 and June 9.

The next meeting of the young adult program will be held at 6 p.m. on May 21. This month’s topic will be well-known authors such as J.K. Rowling, John Green, Rick Riordan and others who write for the young adult category.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met May 10 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 51 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “The Things That Matter Most.”

The May 18 bus trip to the casino has been canceled.

The May 24 meeting will include an observance of Memorial Day.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.

Spotted lanternfly

Schuylkill County Master Gardeners will present a series of free seminars on the dangers of the spotted lanternfly. The insects pose a threat to local vineyards, orchards, scrubs and trees.

The first session will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at 1202 AG Center Drive in Pottsville. Additional seminars will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 20 and July 18, also at the AG Center.

To register, or for more information, call 570-622-4225, ext. 23.

A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

A combined Memorial Day service will be held on May 27 at Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley, followed by a covered dish luncheon.

Car show

The Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a series of free, informal car shows at Heisler’s Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley. The shows will be held on five weekends through June 17. Billed as “Sundae Drivers Park and Gawk,” organizers say the events are meant to be fun, informal shows where car enthusiasts can spend time together swapping stories and enjoy good food.

The next get-together is scheduled for Sunday. Additional shows will be held June 3 and June 17.

Hours for all the events are tentatively scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
