STEP-Up Tamaqua

STEP-Up Tamaqua will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St.

This month’s meeting will be an informal, communitywide educational session on medical marijuana, “myths, chronic pain and opiate replacement therapy.” Guest speakers will be Victor Guadagnino CBDO and Bradley Carlson, director of Pharmacy at Keystone Canna Remedies in Bethlehem.

The public is welcome to attend. Please use the lower level entrance.

Dames at Sea

The Tamaqua Community Theater will hold open auditions for its next production, “Dames at Sea.”

Auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 20 and from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 22 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.

Directors are looking for actors in seventh grade and older, as well as tap dancers and singers. Come to the audition prepared with a vocal selection with prerecorded music, not a cappella, as well as a 30 to 60 second mini monologue, already memorized.

Performances are scheduled for Aug. 3 and 4.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. on May 22 at Zion Church Hall in the Lewistown Valley.

Gretchen Brinich, Penn State Master Gardener, will present a program on repotting. Members are welcome to bring a plant and a larger pot. Soil will be provided.

The arrangement for the evening will be “fresh flowers and greens in a kitchen vessel.” Fresh flowers will also be the theme for the specimen judging. New members are always welcome. For more information, call 570-467-3400.

Hunger walk

Tamaqua’s 2018 Hunger Walk was postponed from May 6 to May 20 due to weather. The approximately 1-mile walk will begin at 2 p.m., in the area of the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The walk is the final step in Tamaqua’s Hunger Weekend, a combined effort of the Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership. It is designed to benefit Tamaqua’s three food pantries: Primitive Methodist Church, Trinity United Church of Christ and the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met May 8 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, with 54 members in attendance, to celebrate the group’s 39th anniversary.

Dinner was catered by the M and I Deli of Tamaqua.

Upcoming events include a May 17 trip to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville and is open to anyone 55 or older.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Confirmation Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir rehearses at 11 a.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, church board meets at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, senior choir and Memorial Day Band rehearsals will be at 7 p.m.; Thursday, preschool graduation at 6:30 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion, the Affirmation of Baptism, Sunday school awards and shepherd choir recognition.

Also on Sunday, bells will rehearse at 8 a.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Pentecost Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

The combined choir will rehearse at 7 p.m. on May 22.

May 25 is the last day of preschool.

Donations are being accepted for the June 2 basket raffle.
