Tamaqua giveaway

The Tamaqua Community Volunteers group is holding a free community giveaway event this Saturday. As in past events, the giveaway will take place at the M and M Storage facility on Rose Street, next to the carwash.

The concept is easy. People donate unwanted items between the hours of 8 and 9 a.m. Starting at 9:15 a.m., the items are given away to others.

Donations of clothing, toys, tools, electronics, decorations, pots/pans/dishes, cookware, furniture and appliances will be accepted. Old computer monitors and floor-model televisions will not be accepted.

Volunteers are not able to pick up or store donations. Donors must bring the items to the storage facility the morning of the giveaway.

Anyone living within the 18252 ZIP code is eligible to receive donations and is encouraged to be there by 9 a.m. All items will then be given away, free, via a simple drawing. Anyone can donate.

In case of rain, the event will be moved to Sunday.

For more information, visit the event on Facebook or call 570-668-1234.

Memorial Day

There are just a few events left in the monthlong observance of the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day.

They include a twice-proposed concert by the Third Brigade Band from Pottsville. Rain has forced the cancellation of the outdoor event on the last two Tuesdays. The concert will now be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the East End Park on Mountain Avenue. There will be free refreshments.

The fireworks display is scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, with a rain date of Sunday.

The Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and travel from the east end of the borough to Odd Fellows Cemetery. Kaye Leiby is the grand marshal.

The annual Memorial Day service will be held at Soldier’s Circle in Odd Fellows Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m. or the conclusion of the parade if it runs later.

In case of rain, the parade will be held (barring lightning and thunder), but the service will be moved to the Tamaqua School District Auditorium on Penn Street.

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship and 10:45 a.m. Memorial services this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, bells will rehearse at 8 a.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include recognition of veterans and graduates.
