Times News staffers capture advertising, news awards

Members of the Times News editorial and advertising departments have won a number of awards from professional associations.

Times News staff have won eight Keystone awards in the Pennsylvania News Media Contest.

The winners are:

• Karen Cimms, who won second place in series for a five-part project called a “A Single Mother’s Journey.” The series focused on single mothers who persevered to earn college degrees.

• Amy Miller, honorable mention in series for “The Day the Mountain Cried,” about the 75th anniversary of the death of Army Lt. Fred J. Knauf, a young Michigan soldier whose plane crashed on the Broad Mountain in Nesquehoning,

• Amy Miller, first place for feature beat reporting, for a selection of features about area people.

• Marta Gouger, honorable mention for front page design, for three pages focusing on the Palmerton teachers strike, an ice storm and the death of an eagle.

• Dave Rowe, first place for several Spotlight features on artists; “In living color,” “Arctic artwork” and “Capturing a series of moments.”

• Amy Burger, second place for page design for a fishing feature, a story on a bowl maker and a page about Trina Schellhammer, a New Ringgold woman who makes keepsakes from lost loved ones’ clothes.

• Amy Miller, first place for business or consumer story, with the story about Trina Schellhammer.

• Bob Ford, honorable mention for graphic/photo illustration, for a player of the year illustration for Pleasant Valley track athlete Mike Mitchell.

The Lehigh Valley Press weekly publications also won 25 Keystone awards in the Pennsylvania News Media Contest.

The Times News staff also won five awards in the 2017 Pennsylvania Associated Press Media Editors contest.

Winners were:

• Bob Ford, second for best illustration or graphic, Cross Country Athlete of the Year Tina Capparell from Marian Catholic High School; second in feature photo for “In Flight,” a photo of a duck; and second in the photo story category for “Family’s Fasnacht Tradition.”

• Brian Myszkowski garnered a first place in the short video for “S’mores” from a Jim Thorpe school project.

• Marta Gouger won second place for a front page design, “9 Homeless After Fire.”

The awards will be presented this weekend at the Pennsylvania Press Conference in Gettysburg.

Advertising

The advertising department won 11 awards in the Interstate Advertising Managers’ Association annual contest:

• Best Digital ad, first place for Bear Mountain Butterfly, and second place for Dawn’s Vinyl Designs.

• Best print campaign, first place, Pizza Como, and third place for Tamaqua Community Arts Center.

• Best campaign using multiple products, first place for The Pyramid, second place for The Seventh Moon and third place for Fegley Oil.

• Multiple advertiser ad, first place for Honor Our Veterans and third place for Lehighton Downtown Directory.

• Most innovative idea, second place for Bowe & Odorizzi Law Offices for using Prindeo.

• Special section/niche publication, third place for the Times News Cookbook.

The awards were presented on May 10 at the 2018 IAMA workshop at the Atherton Hotel in State College.
