School bus driver arrested for DUI
A school bus driver from Monroe County allegedly attempted to pick up elementary school students while under the influence, according to police.
Lourdes Torres, 49, of East Stroudsburg, attempted to pick up students at Smithfield Elementary in Smithfield Township Wednesday afternoon, state police said in a news release.
State police were notified by a police officer at the school that Torres was attempting to pick up children while intoxicated. Police said Torres had just returned from dropping off students from East Stroudsburg Area High School South.
The trooper who responded asked Torres to perform field sobriety tests, during which she showed signs of impairment. She was transported to St. Luke’s hospital for a blood test. Police did not disclose the results.
Torres was then taken to Magisterial District Judge Daniel Higgins, arraigned and released on $50,000 bail.
She faces 21 counts of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
