Park commission established
West Penn Township has decided to form a park commission for a park it will re-christen after a late industry giant.
The township’s board of supervisors on Monday unanimously agreed to start its own committee for the West Penn Park East.
Board Chairman Tony Prudenti suggested that supervisors form the group, and in turn, the board named several individuals to serve.
They include township police Chief Brian Johnson, township secretary Katie Orlick, township Treasurer Karen Wittig, township roadmaster Singleton Harvey, Dennis Kabana, Jimmy Akins, and Allicia Greene.
The commission will hold its initial meeting at 7 p.m. June 27. From that point forward, the commission will meet at that same time on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the first year.
Prudenti said that the meeting will be open to the public, and encouraged residents to attend.
In a related matter, the board also approved the scheduling of the field and pavilion at the park.
Kabana will be in charge of the scheduling for the field, while Orlick will be in charge of scheduling for the pavilion.
The board’s actions came after it agreed last month to adopt a resolution for a $55,000 grant for the West Penn Park East.
Supervisors said they plan to rename the park J.E. Morgan Memorial Park after the late John E. Morgan, who passed away in 2001.
The grant will pay for a new sign, which will read J.E. Morgan Memorial Park; playground equipment; re-skinned infield of the baseball field; an equipment shed/stand; pavilion and picnic tables.
