Walnutport traffic light project to soon be bid out

Published June 15. 2018 11:00AM

Walnutport plans to bid out a project for the main traffic signal at the busiest intersection in the borough in the not too distant future.

A brief update on improvements to the traffic light at Best Avenue and Main Street was given at Thursday’s borough council meeting.

The borough submitted the revised traffic signal condition diagram to the state Department of Transportation last month.

In turn, PennDOT replied with comments, and the borough is currently revising and plans to resubmit next week.

The project specifications are nearly complete, and once PennDOT approves, the borough can advertise for bids.

Borough engineer Jason Newhard said the plan is to bid the project either in July, or for sure by August.

Last month, council agreed to have council President Bill Turk sign the new condition diagram when ready for submission to PennDOT.

Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz said last month that the borough was previously awarded a $25,000 Green Light — GO program 50/50 matching grant.

Wentz said the borough was awarded the grant two years ago through PennDOT to update the light.

As part of the project, the light would receive new light heads, a new controller and control box and emergency pre-emption.
