Carbon OKs roof repairs

Published June 18. 2018 01:20PM

The Carbon County Commissioners approved repairs to the courthouse roof in the coming months.

On Thursday, the board awarded the contract for the project to low bidder C&D Waterproofing Corporation of Bloomsburg at a cost of $216,000.

The company will replace approximately 80 slates; complete flashing and caulking work; install stainless steel snow guards and replace existing ones; repair the copper external gutter in some areas; and install new insulated glass over the existing skylight and protect the underlying stained glass ceiling from damage, as well as other work in the scope of the project.

C&D Waterproofing has 100 days to complete the project once all paperwork is signed and the notice to proceed is issued.

The roof of the courthouse was last repaired in late 2008 by C&D Waterproofing.

At the time, the county officials had decided that the slate, which was 36 years old, needed to be repaired or replaced and preventive measures needed to be taken to make sure the pedestrians below were safe when walking along the sidewalks around the courthouse.

That previous winter, a pedestrian was struck with a piece of falling ice after the sun had melted some of the ice on the courthouse roof.

The cost of that project came in around $250,000.
