A look back: June 29, 1978

Mrs. Frederica (Coury) Winkler, a correspondent in charge of the Times News Lansford office, will be the recipient of the Panther Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 1978 Achievement Award.

She is a former Army and private duty nurse and the widowed mother of three children.

“Freddie” to her friends is the eldest of the six children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coury. Coury was associated in business with his brother John, a PVCC awards recipient in 1972, in operating the former Boston Shoe Store.

Winkler served in the Army Nursing Corps. Her late husband was doing research work for IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York, when he was fatally stricken with polio.
