Cressona Band

The Cressona Band will present two local concerts in July.

First up will be a concert at Heisler’s Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley on July 15. The music will flow from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include performances by the Junior Cressona Band.

The band will perform at the East End Playground at 7 p.m. on July 25. The concert will be dedicated to the late Sheldon Shafer, a longtime member and band benefactor. Rain date will be Aug. 1.

The playground is located on Mountain Avenue. The refreshment stand will be open.

Concertgoers are welcome to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets for either event.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met June 28 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 41 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “God Made This Day.”

Guest Hilda Manhardt was given a warm welcome. Birthday wishes were extended to Mary Bittle, Penny Schlorf, Diane Gould and Melody Weicker, who celebrated their special days in either May or June. Refreshments were served.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA. Due to the July 4 holiday, the next meeting will be held on July 12.

Family fun

Revive Community Fellowship will sponsor a Family Fun Night on July 17 at the North Railroad Street parking lot.

Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. and include games, food, a dunk tank, face painting, bounce houses and giveaways. The free fun will continue until 8 p.m.

Donations are welcome and will be used to defray costs of local missions.

Chamber concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its 12th annual summer concert series this Thursday with It Takes Two playing top 40s and classic good-time oldies. The concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station. All events are weather permitting.

The entertainment will continue throughout the summer months, on select Thursdays. The rest of the schedule includes: July 19, Shellshocked Churchills, classic rock; July 26, Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats, hillbilly rock; Aug. 2, Buddy Musselman, classic rock and outlaw country; Aug. 9, The Fat Cats, rock ’n’ roll; Aug 16, Magic Stew, classic rock/jams; Aug. 23, The Bees Knees, ’60s rock and the British invasion bands; Aug. 30, Gene Morrison, oldies and the classics.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include Holy Communion.

Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Bible study sessions are held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays; Hope in the Mountains NFG are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; the board of trustees will meet at 7 p.m. on July 11.

Sal news

The Tamaqua Salvation Army is preparing for the new school year by scheduling a book bag giveaway on Aug. 13 and 14. Hours both days will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dates to sign up for holiday food baskets will be Oct. 9, 10 and 11.

Vacation Bible School, with the theme Hero Central, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 23-27.
