Carbon man given prison term for resisting arrest, firearms count

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Friday on charges of resisting arrest and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon.

Jonathan Joel Tappen, 25, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in prison on both charges.

Tappan was arrested for an incident that occurred on Oct. 20, 2016, in Jim Thorpe. Borough police responded to a report of a fight at a bar along Broadway.

While looking for people involved in the fight, police came across Tappan, who they knew from prior contacts.

While speaking to him, he became unruly and refused to respond to commands by the officers. It took substantial force to take him into custody, the police report indicated. A .380-caliber handgun was found on him. It was noted Tappan was not involved in the fight at the bar.

Serfass also ordered Tappan to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, render a total of 200 hours of community service when paroled, make restitution of $94.99 to the borough for damages to a police uniform, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

He will begin the jail term at 10 a.m. on July 13. He was granted work release privileges.
