Raider band

Tamaqua Raider Band Director Mark Beltz has announced the dates for summer rehearsals and band camp.

Summer rehearsals for instrumentalists will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on July 17 and July 24. Drum line rehearsal will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on July 19 and 26.

Old and New Night will be held on July 31. New members will rehearse from 4 to 6 p.m. All instrumentalists will rehearse from 6 to 8 p.m.

Band Camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 6. Camp is mandatory for all band members.

All rehearsals will be held in the band room.

Garden hotline

Penn State Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County have established a Horticulture Hotline for county residents with questions about their lawns, landscapes and gardens. The hotline is staffed entirely by volunteers and will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from now until October. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The master gardeners have an office at the Schuylkill County Cooperative Extension Office, 1202 AG Center Drive, Pottsville. There, you will find free brochures on hundreds of topics, such as trees, flowers, lawns, garden soil, insects, plant disease and wildlife control.

Blood Drive

Tamaqua Masonic Lodge 238 will sponsor a blood drive for the Miller-Keystone Blood Center on July 26. The drive will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at the lodge, located at 7 Shawn Ave., Route 54 in Hometown.

Anyone 17 or older who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health is eligible to donate blood.

Zion Lutheran

Zion Lutheran Church will host a Christmas in July candlelight service at 5:30 p.m. on July 28. The traditional service will be followed by a traditional Christmas dinner and time of fellowship.

The congregational picnic will be held on Aug. 25 at the West Penn Community Park. While food will be served from 3 to 5 p.m., everyone is welcome to come as early as 1 p.m. to enjoy the park setting. Sign-up sheets will be available beginning in early August.

Calvary Lewistown

All services for Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle. The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, there will be an evening service, featuring a challenge from the pastor, at 6:30 p.m.

A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18.

The next movie night will be held July 21, featuring the film “Behind the Waterfall.”

The Dixie Melody Boys will perform on July 26. The concert of gospel music will begin at 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter’s Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Vacation Bible School will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday, July 16-20, with closing services during the 10 a.m. worship service on July 22. That service will be held at West Penn Park.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Sunday is the deadline for newsletter items. The Messenger will be assembled at 9:30 a.m. on July 19.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Wednesday, evangelism committee meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, consistory will meet at 6:30 p.m.
