Main Street in Slatington is now decked out in a sea of blue.

That’s because 28 new banners now adorn the borough’s historic district.

The new banners — blue in color to closely resemble Northern Lehigh School District’s school colors — have been installed along the borough’s Main Street corridor.

They were recently put up by members of the Slatington Borough crew to replace faded banners that were installed in 2005 and 2007, said Dan Stevens, president of Northern Lehigh Future Focus.

“They only last so long and they got faded and worn out and torn,” Stevens said. “It was really to replace the banners that we had; they didn’t look very good.”

Stevens said Northern Lehigh Future Focus reached out to area businesses, civic organizations and residents to “adopt a banner” throughout the fall and winter of 2017-18.

In addition to the various businesses and organizations, the banners were paid for through a $1,694 grant from the Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation, he said.

Stevens said the purchase and installation of the new banners throughout the historic district of the borough was done to indicate that Slatington is a historic town.

“I think they look great,” he said. “We’re just happy that everyone was able to come together, that the chamber stepped up, and the community stepped up, too.”

Stevens said a check presentation and banner unveiling will be held at 9 a.m. July 24 at the Slatington Borough Building, 125 S. Walnut St.

Sponsors of the Adopt a Banner program will be recognized at that time, he said.

Over the past 11 years, the Main Street Lehigh Valley Chamber Foundation has provided $400,000 in support to more than 250 projects in every community in the Lehigh Valley and Carbon County.
