Garden club

Members of the Lewistown Valley Garden Club had the opportunity to tour the gardens of two of Schuylkill County’s Penn State Master Gardeners. Both homes are located in the Pine Grove area. The tour was part of the club’s June meeting.

The club will hold its annual picnic on July 24 at Leiby’s Grove in the Lewistown Valley. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m.

Floral entries for the annual Schuylkill County Fair are to be taken to the fairgrounds in Summit Station from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 28. Kitchen accessories will be the theme for various arrangements.

The club meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Zion Church Social Hall in Lewistown Valley.

East End entertainment

The East End Playground will be the place to be on the next two Wednesday evenings.

This evening, the movie “Black Panther” will be presented at 8:30 p.m. The movie is based on a Marvel superhero.

On July 25, the Cressona Band will perform a free concert in memory of the late Sheldon Shafer, a longtime member of the band and benefactor. The concert will begin at 7 p.m.

The refreshment stand will be open for both events. Bring your own blankets or lawn chairs.

The park is located on Mountain Avenue in Tamaqua.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met July 12 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 48 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “No One But You Lord.”

Gus Schlorf, Joe Bednarik and Shirley Kaiser were added to the sick list. Returning members Sandy Scott and Norma Baker were given warm welcomes.

The annual summer picnic will be held at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club on Sept. 13. Participants are to bring a dessert for sharing.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA. The next meeting will be held on July 19.

Raider band

Summer rehearsals for Tamaqua Raider Band instrumentalists will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on July 24. Drum line rehearsal will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on July 26.

Old and New Night will be held on July 31. New members will rehearse from 4 to 6 p.m. All instrumentalists will rehearse from 6 to 8 p.m.

Band Camp will begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 6. Camp is mandatory for all band members.

All rehearsals will be held in the band room.

Chamber concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its 12th Annual Summer Concert Series on July 19, with the Shellshocked Churchills playing classic rock. The concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station. Platform and dining room seating at the restaurant are available by reservation. All events are weather permitting.

The entertainment will continue throughout the summer months, on select Thursdays. The rest of the schedule includes: July 26, Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats, hillbilly rock; Aug. 2, Buddy Musselman, classic rock and outlaw country; Aug. 9, The Fat Cats, rock ’n’ roll; Aug 16, Magic Stew, classic rock/jams; Aug. 23, The Bees Knees, ’60s rock and the British invasion bands.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Bible study sessions will resume in the fall.

St. Peter’s Union

This Sunday’s service for St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville will be held at 10 a.m. at the West Penn Park. The service will include the closing ceremony for vacation Bible school.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, church board meets at 6 p.m.; softball games at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at West Penn Park; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., worship and music committee meets at 6 p.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include an infant Baptism.

Bible study sessions are held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Hope in the Mountains NFG is held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday.
