Event canceled

Operation Touch of Home announces that the Monster Truck Show that was to be held on Aug. 11 and 12 has been canceled.

The group extends its deepest regrets and explains that due to circumstances beyond its control this had to happen, adding that Groupon will be reaching out to those who have already purchased tickets. The event cannot be rescheduled in 2018.

Mission meal

Our Lady Queen of Peace church, Gilbert, is the site for West End Mission meals on Thursday. The time is from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.

Regional meeting

The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk Regional Comprehensive meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Democrats meet

The West End Democrats Club meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the West End Fire House on 715 in Brodheadsville. The club is recruiting people to staff the booth at the West End Fair from Aug. 19-25.

The club represents the six townships of Monroe County’s West End: Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Polk and Ross.

Seniors menu

The Chestnuthill Group of the Monroe County Seniors meets Wednesdays and Fridays at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

The menu choice for the hot meal is penne with meat sauce for this Friday.

The choices for next week Wednesday, the beginning of a new month, were not yet posted at column’s deadline time.

Spotted lanternfly

Monroe County Conservation District and Penn State Extension Master Gardeners are partnering to hold a free public meeting with expert speakers, Mark A. Boudreau, Ph.D. assistant teaching professor, Department of Biology, Penn State Brandywine, and Matt Gaimbra, Resource Conservation Specialist, MCCD.

The program will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Registration is encouraged. One can do so at Penn State Extension at 570-421-6430 or the Monroe County Conservation District at 570-629-3060.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center, a food pantry at Effort UMC, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Post cleanup

American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert has its July Post cleanup on the calendar from 10 a.m. to noon for Saturday.

Picnic coming

The Kunkletown picnic will be held Saturday in St. Matthew’s UCC grove.

Activities begin at 3 p.m. with music by the The Cramers Band & Friends until 6 p.m. Children’s activities begin at 4 p.m.

There is also an adult horseshoe contest, for which one must register by 3:30 p.m., and a cake raffle and cake walk.

Salem’s preacher

Kaye Lentz is scheduled to fill the pulpit this Sunday and next at Salem UCC in Gilbert. The service is at 10 a.m.

Free bread

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, has a free bread pickup from noon to 4 p.m. Mondays.

From 2 to 3 p.m. the church offers a sign language class and from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the community outreach dinner offers a free meal for anyone who walks through the doors. There are also clothes available for those in need.

Healing Waters

The Western Pocono Women’s Club is again helping The Project Healing Waters event at the Indian Mountain Rod and Gun Club in Kresgeville on Aug. 1.

The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Women’s Club members are responsible for the food. The members of the Rod and Gun club and Trout Unlimited will handle the fishing with the veterans.

Eldred supervisors

The next meeting of the Eldred Township board of supervisors will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 1, at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

Fiddletown Road is being repaved so travelers should expect one lane alternating and delays.

Help available

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications for our Home Preservation Program, which is designed to help homeowners affected by low income, age, or disability, to make necessary repairs to their homes.

Projects may include: roof replacements, replacement of hot water heaters, pest control, gutter replacements, porch and deck repairs, a new stove or refrigerator, and many other home repairs that impact the health and safety of the home environment.

Mountain Bike Day

Plans are set for Mountain Bike Day on Aug. 11 at the West End Regional Park, 578 Evergreen Hollow Road, in Brodheadsville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and there are more than 6 miles of trails ready to ride. This year new single-track trails have been added for one’s riding pleasure. Plans for refreshments, and maybe some giveaways for those attending are also in the works.

Also, Eric Peterson from Peterson’s Ski and Cycle is scheduled to give a free clinic, and answer biking questions. Bikes can be rented from Peterson’s by calling 570-646-9223. One must call in advance as there are no plans at this time to have extra bikes at the park.

Trails range from beginner to expert, with the emphasis being on the beginner and intermediate trails.

All participants must wear helmets. More information is available at www.weposc.org. One can also check the WEPOSC Facebook page.

Effort UMC is holding a soup sale from Aug. 5-19.
