Schuylkill Twp. partially reimbursed for fees related to water line project

Published August 10. 2018 03:08PM

Schuylkill Township received a partial reimbursement in the amount of $631.99 toward collection fees associated with highway occupancy permits that were related to the Tuscarora water line project. The permits were supposed to be paid for by the contractor, however, the project ended up exceeding the original amount of the grant that was to cover it.

Township Secretary-Treasurer Colleen Barrett said Schuylkill County attempted to extend the amount of the grant and was able to cover close to $69,000 of the overages, which it paid to the contractor. Once those bills were covered, the remaining $631.99 was awarded to the township; however, the township still had to pay $6,318.46 to cover the additional fees related to the HOP permits.

The township also heard from Nathan McDonald, the director for the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission.

McDonald explained some of the programs offered by the ESRC, including basketball tournaments, volleyball camps, tennis clinics, and upcoming events like 5K races. McDonald extended an offer to meet with township officials and residents to discuss other opportunities.

The township received a request from McGowan Company to review the township’s insurance coverage and offer a competitive quote.

Police Chief Frank DiMarco reviewed the monthly police report, which included several citations for the improper use of ATVs and dirt bikes, parking citations and traffic enforcement. DiMarco mentioned that one of the ATV/dirt bike citations involved a person who was wanted by the District Attorney’s office on drug possession charges, and the person was turned over to the county.

DiMarco, who also handles code enforcement, said that several properties cited for dilapidation and abandoned vehicles have been getting cleaned up.

He will continue to monitor the progress.
