Companies submit proposals for Carbon County’s solid waste
Eight companies have submitted proposals to collect Carbon County solid waste.
“We have a solid waste plan in the county, and every 10 years we have to go out and request proposals from different waste disposal facilities who are willing to accept the waste generated by the county, and what it would cost if we take the waste to those different landfills,” said county solicitor Daniel A. Miscavige.
Commissioner William J. O’Gurek said the 1988 Municipal Waste Planning and Recycling Act “puts that responsibility on counties. We’re asking for proposals for multiple years on a facility to accept about 30,000 tons of refuse per year.”
That’s broken down into municipal waste, sewage and sludge, and demolition waste,” he said.
The intent of the act is to make sure that counties plan 10 years in advance to make sure the waste will have a place to go.
Carbon has more than one facility under contract, O’Gurek said.
“In case one closes down at some point in time, you have to have a second place to take it,” he said.
The companies submitted proposals through 2028. They will be given to the county Planning Office and waste consultant for review.
