Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held an installation of officers on June 20. The ceremony was held at the Coal Street Pub in Middleport.

Officers for the 2018-19 service year are: Sue Hummel, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Patti Burke, treasurer; Mary Machay, recording secretary; and Helen Walters, corresponding secretary.

On July 18, the sorority met at Skipper Dippers in Still Creek. President Hummel reviewed the meeting calendar and appointed committees.

The first regular meeting will be held Sept. 12 at the home of Patti Confer.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 in the social hall at Zion’s Church of the Lewistown Valley.

Carol Kohn will be the guest speaker and present a program on water conservation. For those participating in the monthly judging, the arrangement category will be fresh flowers and greens in a summertime vessel, while the specimen will be any blooming flower.

Library news

The Tamaqua Public Library has adult book discussions on the last Monday of each month. August’s book is “The Wife Between Us,” written by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.

The library is located at 30 S. Railroad St., Tamaqua.

Hometown auxiliary

The Hometown Fire Company Auxiliary will meet Sept. 10 at Basile’s Restaurant on Route 309 in Hometown. The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m., but members are welcome to come early, at 6 p.m., for a Dutch treat dinner.

New members are always welcome.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, the adult class and allegro bell choir will meet following the service.

Zion Lewistown

This Sunday’s service for Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley will be held 10:30 a.m. at Leiby’s Grove. The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate.

A picnic lunch and games will be held following the service.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. A farewell brunch will be held following the service. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, dinner theater practice at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.
