Anthracite Raceway of Hazleton today won the last available license to operate a harness racing track in Pennsylvania.
The company, which represents a pooling of interests of the original anthracite group with the principal stockholders of Pocono Raceway, one-time competitor, was issued the permit at a meeting of the state Harness Racing Commission.
The group plans to build a $5 million track near St. Johns, Luzerne County, about 15 miles from Wilkes-Barre and 6 miles from Hazleton, consisting of a main track, training track, a grandstand to accommodate 20,000 people and parking areas for 6,000 cars.
