Holiday impact

The Labor Day holiday on Monday has caused some schedule changes.

Ross Township board of supervisors normally meets on the first Monday of the month, but since it is Labor Day the board will meet on Sept. 10, the second Monday.

All Sports Club

According to the Pleasant Valley School District calendar, the All Sports Club will meet at 7 p.m. in the high school library Friday.

Seniors meet

The Monroe County Seniors Chestnuthill group, meeting at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville on Wednesday and Friday, will be able to place an order for the Friday hot luncheon of rotisserie turkey.

The September newsletter was not posted at column’s deadline time.

That order must be placed with the site manager by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-242-6770.

Doors are open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is a donation request for meals.

Pantry open

The West End Food Pantry in Kunkletown, located at the Eldred Community Center on Kunkletown Road, will be open from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday.

It provides free food for those in need in the West End of Monroe County and neighboring towns.

Clients are asked to bring a photo ID, and if able, their own bags.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion will meet at 11 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 927 home in Gilbert for the group’s monthly meeting.

Backpacks needed

From Effort UMC comes word that the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is seeking donations of new backpacks as a part of its school supplies distribution program.

Anyone who would like to participate in this program can bring a new backpack donation to the church and place it in the SFRC barrel located in the narthex by Sunday.

Summer tours end

Quiet Valley will end its summer tours Monday. Then many special events fill the calendar. Among them the two-day event, Harvest Festival, which will be held Oct. 6 and Oct. 7.

Shawl ministry

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry will begin the fall season of using their needle skill to make prayer shawls for people who are hurting on Tuesday.

PV Open House

Two schools in the Pleasant Valley School District will hold open houses. The Middle School open house is set for Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School will hold its Open House and book fair on two consecutive evenings, Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday the Open House is for grades kindergarten and first grade, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The next evening, Sept. 6, it is for grades 2 and 3, also from 6 to 8 p.m.

Chestnuthill Supers

The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, in the municipal building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Home Association

The West End Home Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert.

Yard sale

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville is holding its precious junk sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 7 and Sept. 8.

Sunday school

Due to the Labor Day holiday, many area churches will begin the Sunday school classes on Sept. 9.

St. Matthews UCC in Kunkletown will hold its first session, beginning at 10:30 a.m. that day. All will gather together in the social hall and then split up into classes by age group. There are classes for children age 3 through Confirmation.

Anyone with questions or willing to help is asked to contact Coordinator for Spiritual Formation Staci Gower.

She reminds all that the church offers a staffed nursery during all worship services.

At Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville Rally Day is being held on Sept. 8.

There will be the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services and a covered dish luncheon afterward to honor and thank local heroes, including fire, ambulance, police, township leaders, political leaders, etc.

Effort UMC’s Sunday school will not begin until Sept. 16, but on this Sunday, the church will have the fellowship breakfast from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Salem UCC, Gilbert, continues will have its pulpit filled by Pastor Randy Lentz.

Community Day

Ross Township’s 10th Community Day Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8, at the Ross Township Park on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.

The township wants to promote community involvement and invites residents to come out and meet their neighbors.

It is also great way to find out about different organizations and a fantastic opportunity to become involved.

Being offered is entertainment, demonstrations, old-time photos and artifacts, tradesmen, food and drink, and more.

OTOH meeting

A regular meeting of Operation Touch of Home will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

GriefShare session

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church is opening its heart and doors to widows and widowers for a special session of GriefShare called Loss of a Spouse. This one evening program will be held on Sept. 23 at the church from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. A small donation is requested to cover the cost of the workbook. “Loss of a Spouse” was compiled by experts whose teachings stem from pastoral counseling and a deep love of Christ. The facilitator will be certified counselor Marsha Beers.

A 13-week recovery program that offers support and resources to all who are grieving will be offered at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church beginning Sept. 30. The program is timed to offer guidance and support through the difficult holiday season. It will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. each Sunday afternoon. A donation to cover the cost of the workbook is suggested. The 13 sessions will also be facilitated by Marsha Beers.
