Tamaqua news for Aug. 29, 2018
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce has extended dates for its 12th annual Summer Concert Series, rescheduling some acts that were rained out earlier this summer. The next event will be Thursday and will be a tribute to the late Gene Morrison, featuring his family and friends. Gene was scheduled to present the concert, but passed away last week.
The concerts are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station. All events are weather permitting.
The entertainment will continue: Sept. 6, Carbon Boxcar; Sept. 13, Vinyl Persuasion; Sept. 20, It Takes Two, top 40s and classic good-time oldies; and Sept. 27, Buddy Musselman, classic rock and outlaw country.

Tamaqua seniors
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met Aug. 23 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 49 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Belief Brings Peace.”
Members were reminded of the annual summer picnic, which will be held Sept. 13 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club in Clamtown. Activities will begin at noon. Deadline for reservations is Thursday.
Shirley Kaiser, Kathleen Valentine and Alberta Woodring were welcomed back.
Refreshments were served.
The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA. The next meeting will be Thursday and will include a celebration of July and August birthdays.
Hometown auxiliary
The Hometown Fire Company Auxiliary will meet Sept. 10 at Basile’s Restaurant on Route 309 in Hometown. The business meeting will begin at 7 p.m., but members are welcome to come early, at 6 p.m., for a Dutch treat dinner.
New members are always welcome.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Church, West Penn. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., worship and music committee meets at 6 p.m.; Thursday, cherub choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., junior choir practices at 7 p.m. and senior choir meets at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday Sundae and the Festival of Harvest Home will be celebrated on Sept. 9.
Calvary Lewistown
All services and activities for Calvary United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle through Labor Day.
The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday. Sunday school classes meet at 10:25 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a Gospel concert, featuring the group “Witness” from Easton, will be held at 2:30 p.m. and an evening service will be held at 6 p.m.
The Lumber River Quartet from North Carolina will perform a Southern Gospel Concert at 7 p.m. on Aug. 24.
The 105th Annual Camp meeting and services will continue this week with services at 7 p.m. nightly. The Rev. Pat and Mrs. Donna Burkhalter of Park Hills, Missouri, will be the guest evangelist and singers.
On Labor Day, Sept. 3, activities will include a worship service at 10:30 a.m., a concert by “Mended Heart” of Pine Grove at 2:30 p.m. and closing services at 6 p.m.
